Fu Manchu's first album, No One Rides for Free (1994),[3] was released by Bong Load Custom Records, an independent label. No One Rides for Free marked the beginning of the band's heavy focus on muscle cars and drag racing, common themes in the stoner rock genre.[4]
Abshire left Fu Manchu before they recorded their second album, Daredevil, in 1995.[3] He was replaced by Brad Davis.[3] The band promoted Daredevil with extensive touring throughout the US and Canada, and reached a wider audience thanks to an opening slot with Monster Magnet, who at the time were the commercial darlings of the stoner rock genre.
Southern California stoner rock outfit Fu Manchu exist in a world of their own making, dominated by extra crunchy guitar riffs, vintage muscle cars, and a sense of '70s-style cool that suggests a raunchier, more dude-centric version of Dazed and Confused. Led by guitarist and singer Scott Hill, the sole constant member throughout their existence, Fu Manchu's sound is livelier and more swaggering than that of many of their stoner peers (and with a less obvious devotion to marijuana), but their obsession with motors, old-school metal, and simple but massive guitar figures certainly marks them as part of the fold. Debuting with 1994's No One Rides for Free, Fu Manchu started hitting their stride in the studio with 1997's The Action Is Go, 2000's King of the Road, and 2001's California Crossing were definitive documents of their sound and outlook. While their output slowed in the 2000s, 2014's Gigantoid and 2018's Clone of the Universe showed them continuing to deliver to their fans after launching their own label.

Though Fu Manchu often comes up when discussing the stoner rock of Sleep, Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, Monster Magnet, and, the Orange County band has made the prime focus skate boarding, California vibes, and science fiction, all stuffed in a smoke-filled custom 70s van. As proponents of fuzzed-out guitar riffing, tight arrangements, catchy hooks, and finding the balance between bombast and restraint, Fu Manchu marks all our boxes. The fact they do such a good job not only writing great music, but creating an entire look and feel from album artwork to merchandise helps us look into what was once an aspirational idea of the West Coast to a pair of flat-land Ohio boys.
Fu Manchu aren't one of those bands who sell millions of records or release chart topping albums and singles. But to stoner rock fans, they are one of the genre's touchstones. Plying their trade for more than a quarter century, the California band has won over legions of fans with their powerful live shows and consistently good albums.
Clone of the Universe has the meat and potatoes stoner/hard/psychedelic rock Fu Manchu are known for, but they also stretch themselves musically with some experimental and unexpected moments. It's an appealing combination that will satisfy longtime fans and is a good introduction to those not familiar with their storied history.
Fu Manchu have perfected the art of irreverent rock over the course of their five-album discography. Consecutive albums crammed with cranking riffs, odd lyrical themes and an unadulterated SoCal vibe have revealed a band completely without pretension, inflated egos or a desire to achieve world peace.
Always loved these guys and seen them twice before. This concert was truly awesome, they barely took a breath between songs so we were rocked to our core for about 90 minutes non stop! Longest and best encore of any concert I've ever been to!! Highly recommend to any stoner / desert rock fans!
On the Mount Rushmore of stoner rock, Fu Manchu proudly stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Kyuss, Yawning Man and Monster Magnet. Since their inception in 1987 they have steadfastly stuck to their guns, releasing album after album of fuzzed-out metal worship. Gigantoid is their eleventh album and it finds the California natives feeling gutsier and grittier than ever.
Featuring Marc Lewis (Guitars/Vocals), Pete Testorff (Drums) and Marc Prefontaine (Bass). Doors To No Where have been making music since 2010. Their sound is heavily influenced by Santa Cruz and the local beauty it offers along with the rich history of music. Doors To No Where have been called a stoner rock band but also touch on elements of punk, doom, metal and even grunge.
One of my current favorite genres of music is stoner rock, the influences of which can be traced to proto-metal and psychedelic/heavy rock bands during the 60s and 70s, such as Blue Cheer, Leaf Hound, and Sir Lord Baltimore; as well as more widely known artists from these genres, such as Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. However, the stoner rock genre was only pioneered later, during the early 1990s by bands such as Fu Manchu, Kyuss, Monster Magnet, and Sleep. Their sound helped define the core elements of stoner rock, with slow- to mid-tempo songs and a heavily distorted, groove-laden, bass-heavy sound.
One of the first stoner rock albums was Blues For The Red Sun, released in 1992 by Kyuss and considered by many as a landmark and highly influential album in this genre. Interestingly, in order to produce the distortion that can be heard on the album, guitarist Josh Homme tuned his guitars down two steps to C and plugged them into bass amplifiers: 153554b96e
