After a few minutes, a male mega piranha makes it's way up from the waters and the male scientist makes his way through the mega piranha citadel. He is promptly eaten. Before he dies, he performs a sexual act on the female scientist, who has been transformed into a mega piranha.
The government, in the meantime, has found out about the creation of the piranhas and have brought in two scientists who must figure out how to stop them. The first scientist, who is female and has a crush on the male scientist, is killed by the mega piranhas. The male scientist does not perish and he and the female scientist build a containment dome.
The female scientist, in revenge, eats the male scientist, after she is freed from the mega piranhas. The female scientist then takes her revenge on the male scientist's family, who are killed. They are washed out of the sea on a boat and are eaten by the female scientist, as she plans to eat the male scientist's family as well, but the boat sinks.
The female scientist, who is part of the government and has been trained in how to fight the super fish, seeks the help of the male scientist, whose family have been caught in the plume of water. The two travel to the mega piranhas homeland, where they discover the piranhas have evolved and are now capable of human speech. They have evolved and gone from eating meat to vegetarianism. The female scientist and the male scientist have taken the form of humans and are eaten by the piranhas.
The female scientist, who has been transformed into a piranha, tries to kill her former lover, but he manages to survive. In the ending montage we see that the female scientist has been eaten by the male scientist, who has swallowed her whole. The male scientist is then shown either being eaten by his family or being eaten by the female scientist.
The entire film is highly scripted and is set up to be a fun horror flick, but there are no silly jokes and no off-the-wall freak-outs. Mega Piranha is a very serious and dark horror/sci-fi film. It moves at a very fast pace and is as frightening as it is funny. Some of the funniest moments come from the characters making jokes at each other's expense. I really loved the character of Chris, played by John Cusack. He is a pretty obnoxious character, but he is funny and has just enough charm to make you like him. The supporting cast includes Bill Murray, George Clooney, and Jennifer Love Hewitt. They all deliver their lines with conviction and don't go overboard with the funny. I also enjoy how the movie just flies by without giving away any of the plot. All the information is dropped in as the story progresses. There is a lot more that can be said about this film, but I am not giving away any more spoilers here. So, go check it out!
